When air flows around a moving object, it must accelerate because the flow path around the object is longer than its length. For wingtips, accelerated flow around the curved nose of the fairing is an excellent choice because the lift generation potential increases with the square of the speed.

It seems that the new concept is applied to the support problem, i.e., to the vortex lift problem. In aircraft like the F-16, the spinning vortex flows from the wing extension (called strakes) swirl back and forth over the wing. A vortex has very low pressure in its core (a tornado is just a dangerous natural vortex). By reducing the pressure above the wing, it can be roughly doubled at a high angle of attack (e.g., 30 degrees). This lift is not free; it requires energy to push the angled wings and the vortex system into the air.
